In order to strengthen the capacities for the implementation of the animal welfare acquis by veterinary inspectors, members of Ethical Commissions and users (i.e. scientists and experimental project leaders), a series of training sessions was organised from May to July 2018 about the rules stemming from the Council Directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes.

The training for veterinary inspectors in practical application of animal welfare rules in projects experimenting with animals took place on 16-17th May 2018. During the workshops, the PLAC II Project expert, Siniša Đurašević, presented the benefits of an effective inspection program to 20 veterinary inspectors, and familiarised them with how to design an inspection program, plan and conduct and inspection visit, with indicators, inspection risk analysis criteria, as well as profile and skills of inspectors.

From 11-14th June, 38 members of Ethical Commissions attended the training which dealt with current legislation and future steps in transposition of the Directive 2010/63/EU, national competent authorities for the implementation of the Directive, as well as with a series of relevant documents about animal welfare. The practical training included institutional risk analysis, project evaluation and retrospective assessment.

In addition to this, between 28th June and 6th July, practical training was organised for 47 users, scientists and experimental project leaders.
